Dr Towfighi's research has focused on epidemiologic studies of sex, race/ethnic and socioeconomic inequities in stroke incidence, care, and outcomes and conducting randomized trials aimed at redressing disparities. She has tested strategies for addressing inequities in the Los Angeles County – Department of Health Services (LAC-DHS) public safety-net system, the second largest public healthcare system in the United States. Dr Towfighi is familiar with developing and testing complex interventions in LAC-DHS, as well as designing and implementing coordinated programs in LAC-DHS. In recent years, She conducted three randomized trials of secondary stroke prevention interventions LAC-DHS. She oversaw the site which enrolled the majority of patients in the SUSTAIN (Systematic Use of STroke Averting Interventions) trial, which tested a chronic-care model-based intervention for blood pressure control after stroke (American Heart Association [AHA] Spina Outcomes Center). Dr Towfighi was the PI of the HEALS (Healthy Eating And Lifestyle after Stroke) trial, which pilot tested the impact of a 6-session occupational therapist-led intervention aimed at changing diet and physical activity after stroke (AHA 11SDG7590160). She was MPI of SUCCEED (Secondary stroke prevention by Uniting Community and Chronic care model teams Early to End Disparities), a trial that tested the impact of a multimodal, multilevel complex care manager/community health worker team intervention on improving risk factor control after stroke (1U54NS081764-01).
